Frequently Asked Questions

How much crushed shell do I need?

The amount of shell you need depends on a few factors.  What is the square footage that you need to cover?  What is the depth that you need to lay the shell?   Answers to these questions are important because different sizes of shells have different densities.  For example, it takes 1.32 tons of crushed oyster shell flour to fill one cubic yard.  A larger size shell, our Tabby 1″ to 3″, has a one-ton to one cubic yard ratio.

How are the crushed shells sold?

All of our shell is sold in one-ton increments (no half or quarter-ton amounts).  The shells are packaged in FIBC bulk bags which are then placed onto a wooden pallet.

What do oyster shells, clam shells, and other sea shells cost?

Shell is a commodity so pricing changes due to weather or other natural events.   Shell prices are also dependent on size.  Different shell sizes require different amounts of processing.  To get current pricing, call us at 412-764-2565 or send us a message through our contact page.

Will you ship shells to my home?

Absolutely! We ship shells daily throughout the USA.  From one ton to a hundred tons, to your home or business.  Consolidated Shell makes the sale and delivery as smooth as possible.  For residential deliveries, once the carrier picks up from our processing plant.  We will receive a tracking number which is then forwarded to you.  The trucking company will also call you directly to schedule a delivery date.  This is done so that there are no unwanted surprises.   Shell that is being delivered to a commercial location, is just as easy if not easier if you have a forklift or equipment to unload a one-ton pallet.

What sizes of crushed shells do you offer?

We currently sell five different sizes of shells.  At one time, we had over a dozen sizes available but found that the following five sizes were suitable for most projects.  The sizes we have are based on their crushed size.  Oyster shell flour is the finest, then it’s the wet and dried 3/8″ minus shell.  Next is our 1″ minus and our largest is the Tabby 1″ to 3″ shell.   An important note is the word ‘minus’.  What this means is that you will receive a shell that is at its largest size and smaller.  For example, a 3/8″ minus means you will receive pieces of shell that are 3/8″ in size and smaller (down to dust).    If the word ‘minus’ is not shown in the product description, this means that you will receive the shell size with very little fines/dust.
