Shells & Sizes

Oyster Flour

Oyster flour has a sand-like consistency. It is bright white and recalcifies quickly. This gives bocce courts, pathways, and driveways a smooth, reef-like surface. About 80% of our bocce customers use this size. For professional play, we recommend at least topping your court with oyster flour. An excellent choice for court refreshers as well.

⅜" Minus (Landscape grade, Bocce Blend)

⅜” minus is a crushed oyster shell, three-eighths of an inch in size and smaller. It includes dust (oyster flour) and comes in both WET and DRY styles.  The dust or fines help to bind the shells and re-calcify more quickly. In addition, unlike larger, or whole shells, which can become sharp and unsafe, the ⅜” minus creates a pleasant, textured surface ideal for bocce, driveways, pathways, mulch, and more. It is also the number one choice for chicken breeders for supplementation!

1" minus crushed shell

Our 1″ minus crushed shell blend is ideal for terrazzo and tabby projects, landscaping and hardscaping projects, reef building, tank bedding, mosaic work and more. It includes a mix of shells (oyster, clam, scallop, and other bi-valves) crushed to 1″ in size or smaller. Much like the ⅜” minus, this mix will include dust or fines but what makes this blend special is that it includes shells up to 1″ in size, which means some small whole shells will be included. It is a beautiful blend for any project, including pathways and driveways. We do not recommend using this as your sole aggregate for pathways and driveways due to the potential hazard of sharp shells. This is better combined with ⅜” minus as an artistic additive.

1"-3" Terrazzo/Tabby Blend

Our Tabby Blend is the shell lovers dream. Comprised of a mix of oyster, clam, scallop and other bi-valve shells, this mix has crushed shells from 1″-3″ in size, many of which remain whole shells. Unlike the 1″ minus, it does not include the fines, making is a chunky, rustic blend idealy suited for masonry work, mosaics, landscaping and hardscaping, and of course terrazzo and tabby projects. If your client is looking for something truly special in their cement or concrete work, this is the blend for the job. We do not recommend using this as your sole aggregate for pathways and driveways due to the potential hazard of sharp shells. This is better combined with ⅜” minus as an artistic additive.
